“See how they invent lies about Allah. That is itself a manifest sin.”

(وَلا تَقولوا لِما تَصِفُ أَلسِنَتُكُمُ الكَذِبَ هـذا حَلالٌ وَهـذا حَرامٌ لِتَفتَروا عَلَى اللَّـهِ الكَذِبَ إِنَّ الَّذينَ يَفتَرونَ عَلَى اللَّـهِ الكَذِبَ لا يُفلِحونَ)

“And do not say, concerning the falsehoods which your tongues utter, This is lawful and this is unlawful,’ to invent lies against Allah. Indeed, those who invent lies against Allah will not succeed.”

١) سورة آل عمران : فمن حَاجَّكَ فِيهِ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَنِسَاءَنَا وَنِسَاءَكُمْ وَأَنفُسَنَا وَأَنفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَل لَّعْنَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَاذِبِينَ .

1)Surah Al-Imran: This verse highlights invoking Allah’s curse upon liars: 

   – “Then whoever argues with you about it after this knowledge has come to you—say, ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women, and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then we will supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars among us.'”

٢) سورة النحل : إِنَّمَا يَفْتَرِى ٱلْكَذِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِـَٔايَِٰ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَٰذِبُون.

2)Surah An-Nahl :

   – “They only invent falsehoods whQurannot believe in the verses of Allah, and it is those who are the liars”.

٣) سورة الزمر : وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ تَرَى الَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ وُجُوهُهُم مُّسْوَدَّةٌ ۚ أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِّلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ 

3) Surah Az-Zumar Qur’an

    “And on the Day of Resurrection, you will see those who lied about Allah with their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant?”

1) Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you – say, “Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women, and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the rs [among us].”

٢) قال تعالي : ۞وَمِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ مَنۡ إِن تَأۡمَنۡهُ بِقِنطَارٖ يُؤَدِّهِۦٓ إِلَيۡكَ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ إِن تَأۡمَنۡهُ بِدِينَارٖ لَّا يُؤَدِّهِۦٓ إِلَيۡكَ إِلَّا مَا دُمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِ قَآئِمٗاۗ ذَٰلكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَالُواْ لَيۡسَ عَلَيۡنَا فِي ٱلۡأُمِّيِّـۧنَ سَبِيلٞ وَيَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُونَ  

2)Allah said:And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, “This is from Allah,” but it is not from Allah. And they speak untruth about Allah while they know.

٣) قال تعالي : ٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ يَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۖ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦٓ إِثۡمٗا مُّبِينًا

3) Allah said:Look how they invent about Allah untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin

Swearing on the Quran and lying

  • If the swearer swears an oath on the Quran and is lying, this is a serious crime in Islam, the Holy Qur’an is the holy book of Islam, and swearing on the Quran and lying is considered to be an invocation of the authority of God as a witness to the sincerity of the swearer, If the swearer lies, it is as if he has betrayed God Almighty, Therefore, the consequences of swearing on the Qur’an and however, some interpretations permit specific details of these consequences are a matter of disagreement among Muslim scholars.
  • Whoever swears by the Quran and says: By the Qur’an, or puts his hand on the Qur’an and swears by God Almighty falsely, has committed a grave sin. In Islam, this is called a dipped oath that immerses its holder in Hell, God forbid.
  •  In swearing by God in the Quran, the oath is made more severe and the sin is increased if the one swearing is a liar
  •   Whoever swears a false oath must repent, seek forgiveness, and expiate an oath according to some scholars, which is: freeing a slave, feeding ten poor people with the average amount a man feeds his family, or clothing them, If he is unable to do one of these three, he should fast for three days.
  • In Islam lying about dreams is considered a serious sin because it can deceive and mislead others about divine messages or personal thoughts.

  • 1) Consider motives for lying: Are you trying to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, getting into trouble, or getting something you don’t deserve?   Honesty is usually the best policy in the long run.
  •     2) Be honest with yourself: If you always tend to lie in certain situations, you must understand why. Are you afraid of confrontation?   Do you have low self-esteem?   Once you identify the root cause, you can begin to address it.
  •    3) Communicate openly and honestly: If you’re worried about hurting someone’s feelings, try to find a way to express it kindly and tactfully. 
  •    4) Be willing to take responsibility for your mistakes: We all make mistakes sometimes.   If you are caught lying, the best thing you can do is admit and apologize.   People are more likely to forgive you if you are honest and upfront about your mistake.

What does the Quran say about deception?

  • The Quran  condemns deception in most cases, God said that:( إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُحِبُّ مَنْ كَانَ خَوَّانًا أَثِيمًا) God does not love those who are traitorous and sinful.

  • Chapter 2, Verse 42:“وَلَا تَبْلِسُوا الْحَقَّ بَالْبَاطِلَ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ”.  “Do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” This verse instructs believers to be truthful in their speech and avoid deception.
  •  Chapter 33, Verse 70:   يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with the truthful.” This verse associates honesty with fearing God and living a righteous life.
  •  Chapter 5:119: قَالَ اللَّهُ هَٰذَا يَوْمُ يَنفَعُ الصَّادِقِينَ صِدْقُهُمْ ۚ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ۚ رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ  “God will say, ‘This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness.’ For them are gardens [of Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is the great attainment.”  This verse promises believers a reward in the afterlife for their honesty.
