The one performing Tawaf (circumambulation) of the House (the Kaaba) should begin the Tawaf aligned with the Hajar (the Black Stone) or a part of it, with his entire body. It does not harm if he begins the Tawaf slightly before reaching the Hajar, as the portion he walked before reaching the Hajar is considered null and does not count. The round (Shawt) is only invalidated if he begins the Tawaf after passing the Hajar. In this case, that round is considered null, and the second round will be counted as the first.

As stated in Kashaf Al-Qina’: “He should align himself with it (the Hajar) or align a part of his body with it. If he does not do this, i.e., align his whole body with the Hajar or a part of it, and he begins the Tawaf from the side of the Corner (where the Hajar is) towards the door, such that part of his body is not aligned with the Hajar, or he begins the Tawaf from other than the Corner where the Hajar is, such as the door or the Multazam, that round will not be counted, and the second round and the ones after it will be counted as the first.” During this ritual, one might ask, what do we recite during the 7 rounds of Tawaf? Understanding what do we recite during the 7 rounds of Tawaf ensures that the spiritual aspect of the circumambulation is fulfilled, adding to the physical act of walking around the Kaaba.

Why tawaf 7 times?

Concerning the reason behind performing Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba seven times, there are several significant considerations:

  • Firstly, this represents following the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as when the Prophet performed Tawaf, he did so seven times, making this number a recommended Sunnah (tradition) for Muslims. During these seven rounds of Tawaf, pilgrims often recite various supplications and verses from the Quran.
  • Secondly, the number seven holds profound symbolic and spiritual significance in Islam. The seven is regarded as a sacred number, a symbol of completeness and perfection. Thus, completing the Tawaf seven times expresses the worshiper’s full devotion and spiritual focus.
  • Thirdly, this alignment with the number seven harmonizes with many other Islamic practices, such as the seven circuits of Sa’i (brisk walking) between the Safa and Marwah hills. This consistency in the use of seven circuits helps reinforce the interconnectedness and unity of the various rites of Hajj and Umrah.
  • Fourthly, the repeated Tawaf of seven rounds provides the pilgrim with an opportunity to concentrate, reflect, and renew their intention and connection with the Almighty throughout the ritual. This assists in spiritual purification and the strengthening of one’s faith.
