What is the meaning of surah al kausar?

The Surah talks about the River of Al-Kawthar, which is a river in Paradise from which the Prophet (PBUH) will give drink to the Muslims who have embraced Islam well and have not innovated in religion. This is evident in the hadith of Aisha that Al-Kawthar is a river in Paradise with vessels as numerous as the stars in the sky. The Surah also orders the Prophet (PBUH) to perform the prayer well and to offer sacrifices on the day of Eid Al-Adha, and in them is gratitude to Allah for His blessings.

Overview about Surah Al-Kawthar

The majority of scholars believe that Surah Al-Kawthar is Meccan (i.e. it was revealed before the Prophet’s migration PBUH to Medina). Some of them consider it a Madani surah and it was revealed in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. The evidence for that is through the hadith in Sahih Muslim narrated by Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him.

ويُذْكَرُ فيهِ أنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَغْفَى إِغْفَاءَةً، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مُتَبَسِّمًا، فَقُلْنَا: مَا أَضْحَكَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ: “أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ آنِفًا سُورَةٌ”، فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْكَوْثَرِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: “أَتَدْرُونَ مَا الْكَوْثَرُ؟” فَقُلْنَا: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. قَالَ: “فَإِنَّهُ نَهْرٌ وَعَدَنِيهِ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، عَلَيْهِ خَيْرٌ كَثِيرٌ، هُوَ حَوْضٌ تَرِدُ عَلَيْهِ أُمَّتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.”

It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dozed off briefly, then he raised his head smiling. We asked, “What makes you smile, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “A chapter has just been revealed to me,” and he recited Surah Al-Kawthar. Then he asked, “Do you know what Al-Kawthar is?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “It is a river my Lord, Glorious and Exalted, has promised me. It has abundant goodness, and it is a basin where my nation will come to drink on the Day of Resurrection.”

Why Was Surah Kausar Revealed

Before knowing the surah al kausar benefits, it is important to know the reasons for its revelation so that you can be keen to read it and contemplate its meanings. The reasons for the revelation of Surah Al-Kawthar are many, and this is clear in some of the opinions of the jurists as follows:

The reason for the revelation goes back to the fact that Al-Aas bin Wael was hurting the Prophet PBUH by saying and he was asking people to stay away from him. Because he didn’t have children and he used to say about him that he was “Abtar”, which means that he had no male children. He also said about him that his mention would cease after his death and no one would remember him, so Allah revealed Surah Al-Kawthar to the Prophet SWT to ease the burden on the Prophet and console him in his grief.
That one of the Jewish leaders called Kaab Al-Ashraaf when he visited Mecca, the infidels of Quraish spoke to him and said to him, are you the master of the people of Medina and the best of them? He said to them, “Yes.” They said to him, “Don’t you see this one who is cut off?” They meant the Prophet (PBUH) and they started to slander him and say that he claims that he is better than us and we are the people of Hajj. He said, “You are better than him.” That is why Surah Al-Kawthar was revealed.
Ibn Abbas narrated that Al-Aas bin Wael spoke to the Prophet when he left the mosque, and he started talking to the infidels of Quraish and told them that he spoke to the one cut off. This was because the Prophet had lost his young son, so Allah revealed His saying, “إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ.” That is, the one who curses you, O Muhammad, is the one whose mention will be Abtar. This was the reason for the revelation of Surah Al-Kawthar.

The Five Benefits Of Reading Surah Kausar

The surah al kawthar benefits are many, and all of these benefits can be obtained by paying attention to the interpretation of the verses and contemplating the lessons and morals contained in them. The most important surah al kausar benefits are as follows:

1. Blessings and rewards from Allah

When we read Surah Al-Kawthar, we get many good deeds. Also, contemplating the Book of Allah fills your heart with contentment and blessings, and when you understand the verses, you see that Allah is the Bestower of blessings and sustenance. In addition, the Quran will come on the Day of Judgment as an intercessor for its reciter, raising his status in Paradise with every verse he recites.

2. Protection from enemies and evil forces

All the verses of the Quran help protect against envy, and this is one of the most important surah al kausar benefits; because it makes the Muslim stronger in facing problems. The Quran also repels devils, and the most important surah al kausar benefits appear in Allah’s defense of the Prophet against those who spread rumors and accused him of being truncated. 3. Increase in wealth and sustenance

This is evident in what Ibn Sirin said in his book Tafsir al-Jami`: Whoever recites Surah al-Kawthar in his obligatory and sunnah prayers will be given a drink from the water of al-Kawthar on the Day of Resurrection, a drink after which he will never thirst again. Whoever recites it will be given a drink from every river in Paradise. Whoever recites it will have ten good deeds for the number of those who offered a sacrifice on the Day of Sacrifice. Whoever recites it in a dream will be given good news of much good in this world and the hereafter.

4. Healing for physical and mental illnesses

The Quran makes the Muslim happier and less susceptible to psychological problems, as Allah SWT said in His Holy Book. One of the most important surah al kausar benefits is that it relieved the Prophet and made him smile. The Quran also increases a person’s immunity, which contributes to reducing the occurrence of psychological and physical illnesses and protects him from all harm.

5. Strengthening of faith

When we recite Surah Al-Kawthar today, we see the truth of Allah’s promise, and our faith increases, as the disbelievers who claimed that the Prophet was Abtar are the ones whose mention has been Abtar, while the mention of the Prophet will remain permanent. And we hear five times in the call to prayer every day, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

The Blessings of Surah Al-Kausar

One of the most important surah kausar benefits is that it fills your heart with peace and tranquility, increases your sense of security, and makes you feel that Allah has made everything you face easy, and worries, as it was reported from the Prophet (PBUH) that whoever recites Surah Al-Kawthar, Allah will give him drink from every river in Paradise, and ten good deeds will be written for him for the number of every sacrifice that the servants offer on the Day of Sacrifice or offer.

Is there a specific time when it is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kausar?

There is no specific time when it is preferable to read the Surah over others, as there are no hadiths from the Prophet (PBUH) regarding this, and allocating a specific time to read the Surah without evidence that is in accordance with Sharia is considered a Bid‘ah. It is preferable to choose a time when you feel your heart is present so that you can contemplate the verses correctly, and it is preferable to read the Surah during prayer because the Muslim is more attentive and away from noise and distraction.

Can Surah Al-Kausar be used for personal benefit?

It is not permissible to exploit Surah Al-Kawthar in anything that offends Islam or Muslims; because the Quran has great sanctity, as it is the word of Allah that has no equal, and it shouldn’t be traded or used in a way that is not mentioned in a correct hadith from the Prophet. It isn’t permissible to read the Surah a specific number of times at a specific time to achieve a goal or desire that one seeks to achieve, as long as Sharia doesn’t command this.

What role does the Quran play in daily life for Muslims?

The Quran is considered the guide that the Muslim relies on to understand how life goes around him, because the apparent reason may become clear to us from people’s interpretation of things. But when we read the Quran, we see Allah’s interpretation of it in a completely different way, for He is the One who created everything, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing, and the Quran is a rope, one end of which is in our hands, and the other end is in Allah’s hand.

It’s the means that helps us attain Allah’s satisfaction, as Quran tells us about Himself, the Day of Resurrection, Heaven, Hell, and the Hereafter, and the commands and prohibitions, and thus it is the constitution of the Muslim in his daily life. If the Muslim adheres to it with the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), he will never go astray, and thus it can’t be dispensed with under any circumstances, as it is valid for all times and places.
