Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Medina and he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. The Prophet said, “What is this day you are fasting?” They said, “This is a great day in which Allah saved Moses and his people, and he drowned Pharaoh and his people. Moses fasted on it due to gratitude, so we also fast on it.” The Prophet said, “We are more worthy and closer to Moses than you.” The Prophet fasted the day of Ashura and he commanded fasting on it.

Ibn ‘Abbas reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ  fasted on the day of Ashura (10 Muharam). His Companion said: ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ  , it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor.’ The Prophet ﷺ  said, ‘When the following year comes–Allah willing–we shall fast (also) on the ninth.’ Ibn Abbas reported, ‘The death of the Prophet (saws) came before the following year.” [Hadith Narrated by Imam Muslim & Imam Abu Dawud]

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ  said, “If I live until next year, I will certainly fast the ninth day of al-Muharram.”

This is the day Allah saved the children of Israel from their enemy, so Moses fasted on it. He said: « So I have more right to Moses than you.” So he fasted and ordered him to fast. Narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih.

How do Hadith Describe the Importance of Ashura?

The day of Ashura is one of the witnessed days of Allah, and it has a great importance in the hearts of believers, as they remember Allah Almighty’s victory over His prophets on it, and remember that it is the day on which Allah – Glory be to Him – saved Moses – peace be upon him – from Pharaoh and his soldiers, after Allah drowned them.

He also refrained from harming Moses and those who believed with him, in a scene that consolidates belief in victory and empowerment in the hearts of those who are patient in their religion. Moses, peace be upon him, used to fast this day in gratitude to Allah – Glory be to Him – for His grace and bounty.

The People of the Book also venerated this day and fasted on it, and the Quraish before Islam used to fast on it. Rather, they made it a time to renew the curtains of the Kaaba, as if the laws continued to fast on this day, and the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – fasted on it and ordered it to be fasted before fasting the month of Ramadan was made obligatory. Imam Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih on the authority of the Mother of the Believers, Aisha – may Allah be pleased with her -: (The Quraysh used to fast on the day of Ashura in pre-Islamic times, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to fast on it. When he came to Medina, he fasted on it, and he commanded that they be fasted. When Ramadan was imposed, he left the day of Ashura, so whoever wished, He fasted it, and whoever wished left it.)
