Use the phone to assist in the performance of the prayer

It is not permissible for a Prayer to hold a mobile phone while performing prayer, because prayer requires focusing and humility, and the phone leads to mental distraction. Muslims should not use mobile phones during prayer in order to focus and have humility in it, due to Allah SWT says:

( قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ، الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ)

Qad aflaha al-mu’minūn, alladhīna hum fī ṣalātihim khāshi‘ūn

“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.”

It is permissible to hold the phone to read the Quran from it during prayer, but on the condition of contemplation and humility for the prayer to be valid. However, it is preferable to read the Holy Quran from the Mushaf, because it has a greater reward.

There is no objection to downloading and using prayer programs on phones, because they help to be alerted to the time for prayer. This may be useful because it involves making people hear the adhan (call to prayer) and alerting them to the beginning of the time for prayer.

Can I read dua from my phone while praying?

You can read the dua from paper or from a phone if you do not memorize it. However, in prayer it is preferable that the Duaa be brief, or that the individual strives to memorize the duaa, because that helps to have humility in prayer.

It is permissible to read the Quran or supplications from the phone during prayer, but it is preferable not to use it because the phone distracts the prayer’s mind. Therefore, it is preferable that the individual reads what is easy for him from the Quran during his prayer so that he can concentrate on it.

عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ؛ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَنْصَرِفُ وَمَا كُتِبَ لَهُ إِلَّا عُشْرُ صَلَاتِهِ، تُسْعُهَا، ثُمنُهَا، سُبْعُهَا، سُدْسُهَا، خُمُسُهَا، رُبْعُهَا، ثُلُثُهَا، نِصْفُهَا))

Amār ibn Yāsir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “A person may finish their prayer, and only one-tenth of their prayer is written for them: nine-tenths, eight-tenths, seven-tenths, six-tenths, five-tenths, four-tenths, three-tenths, or half.”

Should I keep my phone away during prayer?

It is preferable to keep the phone away during the performance of prayer because phone ringtones affect humility. Leaving the phone on during prayer is considered disliked, especially if the ringtones include music. Whoever deliberately leaves the phone on in the mosque and causes disturbance to the worshipers has committed a forbidden act. Therefore, the individual must take the initiative to turn off the phone’s sound during prayer.

Muslims must be keen to achieve humility in prayer by avoiding everything that causes disturbance. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the phone away when entering prayer, or to put it on silent, so as not to disturb himself or the prayers as Allah SWT said:

(إنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًا وَرَهَبًا وَكَانُوا لَنَا خَاشِعِينَ )

Innahum kānū yusāri‘ūna fī al-khayrāti wa yad‘ūnanā raghaban wa rahaban wa kānū lanā khāshi‘īn

“Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.”
