The prophets have a great status in Islam because they are the best creation of Allah and the source of guidance for humanity, so Allah SWT commanded us to follow their example, walk in their path and not to differentiate between them in terms of faith. Whoever disbelieves in one of the prophets has disbelieved in Allah. But there are a number of prophets whose status with Allah is greater than others. They are called “the resolute messengers” and they are Moses, Jesus, Noah, ABRAHAM, and the master of the sons of Adam, Muhammad PBUH.
The Prophet Muhammad PBUH is the master of the people of Paradise whom Allah sent as a mercy to the worlds and he is the one who achieved the perfection of servitude to Allah. From the glorification of Muslims for him, some people wonder whether Muslims pray to Muhammad or for him, so Sheikh Saleh Academy answers in this article about the status of the Prophet PBUH and answers this question: do muslims pray to muhammad?
As Muslims should we pray to Muhammad or worship him
Do muslims pray to muhammad? Muslims do not pray to Muhammad, as he is a servant of Allah and Muslims respect him greatly, but despite this, they only worship Allah, the One and Only, who has no partner. Allah SWT is the Creator of everything and is capable of everything. He is the One who sends messengers to command people to worship Him and spread the religion. While Muslims pray for Muhammad a number of times in the morning and evening (i.e. they pray to the Prophet ﷺ that Allah raises his status and increases his favor and position) so that they may attain his intercession on the Day of Judgment. It is one of the supplications that Muslims repeat to receive the reward.
Why Do We Mention Muhammad in Prayer?
After we answered the question, do Muslims pray to Muhammad? Some people wonder about the reason for mentioning the Prophet Muhammad in prayer. The reason is to remind Muslims of the status of the Prophet PBUH and the necessity of respecting him. The Muslim also repeats in the call to prayer “ʾAshhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan Rasūlu Allāh” which means “I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
Also, no one enters the Islamic religion except after saying the two testimonies (shihadas), including the testimony that the Prophet PBUH is the Messenger of Allah. Prayer has great value in religion and the Muslim prays it five times, so it is necessary to mention the most important human that the Muslim must follow in his life, which is the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, so that Allah SWT accepts you.
But did Jesus pray like Muslims? The prayer of our Prophet Jesus is very similar to the prayer of Muslims, as he used to prostrate and make his forehead touch the ground, unlike the prayer of Christians today. A Muslim must pray in the mosque and the presence of muslim in church is not preferable unless he wants to invite them to Islam and has the qualifications to do so.
Do Muslims Pray “In the Name of Muhammad”?
We have learned in detail the answer to the question: do Muslims pray to Muhammad? And that the prayer that consists of several steps, including Ruku and Sujood, is only for Allah. While a Muslim must pray a lot for the Prophet, but Muslims do not pray in the name of Muhammad, but rather they pray in the name of Allah SWT.
But how do we pray to Muhammad PBUH? The best formula used is the Abrahamic prayer because it has many benefits, the most important of which is that it has a great reward. A Muslim receives ten good deeds for every prayer, ten sins are forgiven, and ten degrees are raised with Allah, which are:
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad, wa-ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīm, wa-ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd. Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammad, wa-ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīm, wa-ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd.
“O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”
It is important to know how to learn the Muslim prayer because it is the pillar of religion and the first act of worship for which we will be held accountable by Allah on the Day of Resurrection. If it is correct, the whole work will be correct.
Who do Muslims pray to?
After we have verified the answer to the question: do Muslims pray to Muhammad? It is important to realize that one of the most important pillars of prayer is the intention, which is located in the heart. It aims to sincerely worship Allah alone and that prayer is only for Allah SWT, the Wise, and prayer will not be accepted without that.
Some people may wonder, Is Islam the True Path? There is no doubt that Islam is the right path as we have a living miracle that is valid for all times and places, which is the Quran. Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or from behind it, and it is the word of Allah in which He commanded us to worship Him alone. Islam has mentioned in detail everything that happens to a person after death and answers all the crucial questions clearly.
But Can a Muslim Pray for a Non Muslim?? The answer is definitely no, because the prayer will not be accepted and will not bring any benefit to the dead person. He must be a Muslim who worships Allah alone and does not associate anything with Him.
The Prophet’s Place in Islamic Worship
The Prophet Muhammad is greater to Muslims than their fathers and children, as they love him greatly, indescribably, to the point that he is more precious to them than themselves. The reason for this is that he is the reason for their guidance and their salvation from the fire. He is famous for his mercy towards all creation and Allah SWT said about him in the holy Quran:
“وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ”
Wa-ʾinnaka laʿalā khuluqin ʿaẓīm.
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
And the Messenger of Allah PBUH said:
“لَا يُؤۡمِنُ أَحَدُكُمۡ حَتَّىٰ أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيۡهِ مِن وَالِدِهِۦ وَوَلَدِهِۦ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجۡمَعِينَ”
“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all of mankind.”
How many times a day do Islam pray? A Muslim prays five times a day, which are the basic obligations where a man prays in the mosque while a female Muslim praying is in her home.
How Muslims Honor Muhammad in Their Prayers
Muslims honor Muhammad in their prayers by mentioning him in the testimony of faith in all prayers, which shows his great status in the religion. They pray to Allah SWT for him. Muslims pray after repeating the call to prayer, which is a call to prayer and a great status that no human being has reached.
This is the supplication that is made after the call to prayer:
ٱللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَٰذِهِ ٱلدَّعۡوَةِ ٱلتَّامَّةِ، وَٱلصَّلَاةِ ٱلۡقَآئِمَةِ، ءَاتِ مُحَمَّدًا ٱلۡوَسِيلَةَ وَٱلۡفَضِيلَةَ، وَٱبۡعَثۡهُ مَقَامٗا مَّحۡمُودًا ٱلَّذِي وَعَدۡتَهُ.
Allāhumma rabba hādhihi ad-daʿwati at-tāmmah, waṣ-ṣalāti al-qāʾimah, āti Muḥammadan al-wasīlah wa-al-faḍīlah, wa-abʿathhu maqāman maḥmūdan alladhī waʿadtah.
“O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad the intercession and virtue, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him.”
Some people ask: how long does Islamic prayer last? Most of the time it does not take more than a few minutes but its reward is great as Allah forgives sins through it.
Can Muslims ask the prophet Muhammad for intercession?
It is not permissible for a Muslim to ask the prophet for intercession after his death, because this is polytheism with Allah SWT, as prayer is not valid except for Allah. This is what we have explained in the question: Do Muslims pray to Muhammad?
However, every Muslim may hope and wish that the Prophet will intercede for him on the Day of Judgment. This will only happen by following his Sunnah and praying a lot for him. Every Muslim must pray at specific times, and he should even pray a lot, as well as islam prayer before eating.
